One Step At A Time

Total distance walked last 30 days 286.5 km 54.39 hrs 21912 calories.

Big increase in distance walked compared to last months 174.6 km. Also this month I did my longest walk 20.5 km in 3 hr 54 min. Now that summer is approaching I may need to start the long walks at 5am as my last effort resulted in some sun burn.

Note to self follow Sid the seagull’s advice : In the sun we always say “Slip Slop Slap!” Slip, Slop, Slap! Slip on a shirt, slop on sunscreen and slap on a hat, Slip, Slop, Slap! You can stop skin cancer – say: “Slip,

Walk For Wellness

Over the last 30 days since signing up for the Walk For Wellness Great Wall of China Challenge 2014 I’ve been mainly doing work in the gym. Managing 5 one hour long sessions a week consisting of weight training, spin cycle intervals or cross training on the ellipitical trainer. The Ellipitical crosstrainer is my favorite piece of equiptment in the gym and  is ideal for building up endurance for climbing the Great Wall of China. An hour on this beast should burn about 700 – 900 calories.

Outdoor walks have been below what I was planning due to the number of rainey days we have endured over the last several weeks. I used to be a fair weathered runner in a past life and it seems this bad habit has stuck now that I have turned to walking to spare my knees for a few more years. Having said that…

I used to be a fair weathered runner in a past life and it seems this bad habit has stuck now that I have turned to walking to spare my knees for a few more years. Having said that today was a beautiful day and I was inspired to take an extra long walk afterhaving been motivated by Lee Baston who was running in the Melbourne Marathon just as we were setting out for our walk. Which incidently she finished in 4 hrs and 1 minute ,,, a fantastic effort. Whereas I managed my 14 km walk with Jake (the dog) in 2 hr 39 min.

So the walking tally for the last 30 days is174.6 km.

Walk For Wellness

A few weeks ago a young Facebook friend whom I have never met posted a link to a fundraising page on my Facebook stream from a non for profit organisation, Cancer Support WA.

I could recall reading previous posts from her a few months earlier, commerating the loss of one of her close friends to cancer. Her recent post made me pause and think of how many people I knew from my circle of personal friends and aquaintances who have passed or are in remision or currently being treated for cancer. I stopped counting at twenty.

When I opened the link to the Cancer Support WA page http://walkforwellness.gofundraise.com.au/cms/raylenestory I was touched by Raylene’s story and was inspired to sign up for the challenge because I wanted to give thanks for blessings I have received in the form of good health and fitness particularly over the last several years.

Funds raised from this challenge on behalf of Cancer Support WA, will provide free support for people with cancer, their carers and families. I have pledged to raise a minimum of $4000 for Cancer Support WA.

If you are able to support me with words of encouragement or a tax-deductible donation please go to my fundraising page:

Over the next few months I will be training and fundraising to prepare for this challenge and  I will continue to post my progress on this blog and fundraising page.
